An Overview of Department of Translation and Interpreting

The department was established in 2016 when the School of Foreign Languages, Hangzhou Normal University was officially authorized by the Ministry of Education to offer Bachelor’ Degree in Translation & Interpreting.

The new-born department has a high-caliber teaching staff of 11 including 2 professors, 4 associate professors and 5 lecturers. Among them are experienced translation & interpreting teachers, senior translators and interpreters, and eminent scholars of translation studies. They published plenty of high-quality research papers, monographs and translated works. Besides, about 10 top-notch veteran professional translators and interpreters work as part-time tutors of the department.

Since its establishment, the department has been aware that its innate mission is to nurture professional translators and interpreters tailored to the needs of the market, which relies on industry-university-and-research cooperation. Therefore, all the teaching staff have made successful attempts in this regard.

They accomplished the program, “A Study of Setting up International Communication Bases and the Status Quo and Development of English Websites in Hangzhou” sponsored by the International Communication Office of the Hangzhou Municipal Government; they collaborated with the Foreign Affairs of the Hangzhou Municipal Government, Foreign Language Teaching & Research Press, trade companies and translation companies in setting up a batch of student internship bases; moreover, the department has managed to become the Chinese-English, Chinese-Japanese, Chinese-French and Chinese-German translation service provider designated by the official website of the Zhejiang Provincial Government.

Although the department has a long way to go before it becomes a full-fledged incubator of translation professionals,it is their conviction that joint efforts of teachers and students can open up a bright future.
